Christoph Waltz’s Background:
Christoph Waltz is the son of set designers Johannes Waltz and Elizabeth Urbancic. Waltz studied singing and opera at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York where he studied with Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler. Waltz has been working on stage, in films, and on television in Europe since the 1970s, but was finally discovered by American audiences in 2009 after his star-making turn in Inglourious Basterds.
Breakthrough Role:
Christoph Waltz was one of the least experienced members of the acting ensemble of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, yet he stole the show. During the casting process Tarantino and producer Lawrence Bender had been worried they’d never find the right actor to play Nazi Col. Hans Landa. But when Waltz auditioned, they immediately knew he was right for the role. “He starts his audition, and Quentin’s reading with him,” said Bender. “Quentin and I looked at each other, and I could see in his eyes, and he could see in my eyes that we found him.”
